South Dakota’s Black Hills offer some beautiful areas for horseback riding, but if you are visiting the Black Hills from out of town and want to bring your horses you will need a place to stay. Staying at one of the many horse friendly campgrounds in the Black Hills is a great option. Here are two of the most popular Black Hills Horse Camps.

Broken Arrow Campground

Located in Custer, South Dakota the Broken Arrow Campground is a great place to camp with your horses. The campground is extremely horse friendly, and has trails that lead directly into the Black Hills National Forest from the campground.

The horse camping area at Broken Arrow Campground offers water and electric camping sites or cabins. The corrals are either covered by a roof or located in the shade. Everything needed to care for your horses, including a water spigot, wheelbarrows, and the manure container, are located in close proximity to the horse corrals. However, horse riders are expected to bring everything they need to care for their horses including buckets and feedbags. You may bring in your own hay or grass square bales are available for purchase at the campground.

The campground has contacts with local horse care service providers such as farriers and veterinarians that will come to the campground to care for your horse.

The charge for horses in the shaded corral is $6 per horse per day, and the charge for the covered corral is $10 per horse per day. Campsite rates are as low as $20 per night and range in price up to $30 per night. Cabin rates start at $60 per night and go up to $100 per night depending on the cabin that you choose.

French Creek Horse Camp

The French Creek Horse Camp is the only horse camp located on the grounds of Custer State Park. The campground is located on the banks of the French Creek, and offers plenty of trails for riders to enjoy.

Campers at French Creek Horse Camp can choose from twenty-eight different campsites that range in price from $23 to $27 per night or four cabins that are $47 per night. Each campsite or cabin includes one horse corral, and one additional horse corral per site can be rented for $5 per night.
