Twistleaf Yucca Description

Growing up to two feet high, this perennial succulent has red or white edges and thin white hairs. Leaves are straight when young but will twist as they age. Foliage is evergreen and dark green in color. Stalks of flowers are five feet in height, with clusters of white flowers that are bell-like. Bloom season is between April and June. It has a fibrous root system.

Growing Guide

Grow a twistleaf yucca in partial shade with a dry rocky soil. It is tolerant of full sun and partial shade. Propagate by seed that has soaked for 24 hours prior to sowing.

Distribution

This native plant is found in the state of Texas. It is typically seen in plains of dense brush or in dry rocky areas. It is in the woodlands of Edwards Plateau.

Uses

This does well for a night time patio plant due to it attracting night pollinating moths. It also does well in a shady dry garden or a rock garden that is shaded. It attracts Kendall’s yucca skipper butterflies.

With nicely twisted leaves and tall stalks of white blooms, this yucca has a great design for rock gardens or for any southwest feel. The plants begin as a single leaf head and then will grow into an open clump of leaf heads.
