“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (2011)

Review: The world of pirates is quite ugly, messily fantastic and audacious. Thanks to POTC and One Piece (anime) that this world has invaded ours and we find ourselves yielded to its fantasy. POTC has been one of the highest grossing franchises of Disney and it would continue to be provided they don’t seem to deviate from the charm. The latest entry is no doubt a solid summer entertainer as a stand alone film but as a part of that franchise it is a major disappointment.

The previous movies showed us that Jack Sparrow and POTC are one and the same thing. While there wasn’t enough of him in the previous ones (he was after all the supporting cast) you can get a plenty in this one. The movie has Sparrow written all over it. Thanks to him that you find yourself chuckling every now and then in a rather mundane film. Depp continues his eccentricity in an even more fascinating way and his gait seems even more crooked. Penelope Cruz as the ex-lover of Sparrow is great and enhances the beauty quotient of the movie. Her Spanish tinged accent is gorgeous and makes her even more attractive. Rush as Barbossa performs as well and remains honest to his previous charms. Blackbeard disappoints a bit as the antagonist but the rest of the cast was good.

Talking about effects, the movie is a bit let down. There was a minimal of promised 3D effects and it is one of the major factor in disappointing the fans of the series. The 2D version is decent in effects and is at par with other films of the same blood. But there was one point where the visuals steal your attention for a full 15 minutes and that is where the mermaids enter. Vivaciously deadly, those mermaids are the best part of this flick. That particular scene is as eerie as it could be and is seconded by fruitful make ups and the cutest mermaids ever.

Overall, this latest entry is a decent attempt at making a worthy successor to the original. While it spells Sparrow throughout, the movie takes a worthless take on the plot. Nevertheless, the end result is briskly satisfying. With a room for possible sequels the POTC franchise has a long way to go. I just wish for a One Piece live-action film.
