Pirate Hook Cake

Drop those car keys right now! Don’t even think about going to that expensive bakery across town, to order a fancy pirate cake, which will cost so much that you’ll have to cut back on the price of the birthday party gifts. Why would you do that when you can make the pirate-theme cake yourself? You don’t have to be an artist of any sort to make the cake which will thrill the birthday boy – or girl – and all the guests.

You can make a regular, rectangular cake and give it a pirate theme without much effort – or expense. Just bake any color/flavor of cake from a boxed mix or favorite recipe. Great cake types include chocolate or spice but you can actually make it any flavor. Bake according to package or recipe instructions and allow to cool completely. Turn the cake out onto a platter to frost.

The background color of a pirate’s hook cake can vary, and so can the color of his shirt. For this cake, you’ll create one solid color on the background, then make a shirt, cuff ruffle, and a hook, to complete it. So, if you make a blue background, you could create a red sleeve. Or, make a white background, and give the pirate sleeve a brown or blue color. For any color of background besides white, make the cuff ruffle white. But if you’re doing a white background, make the ruffle tan, brown, or another dark color.

Frost the entire cake and smooth the frosting. Create a simplistic sleeve and a ruffle shape by using fondant or frosting. The sleeve should start at the edge of one of the short sides of the cake and, with ruffle, should reach near the halfway point of the cake. When you use fondant, you can roll and mold it just like play-dough to form the sleeve and ruffle. But, with frosting, you’ll simply apply the two colors of frosting to make the sleeve and ruffle. Create a gray, fondant hook, or even draw a hook shape by using black gel frosting from a tube.

Instead of using frosting or fondant you can also make the pirate sleeve and hook by using assorted candies. Use candy sprinkles for the sleeve, white chocolates for the cuff ruffle, and black jellybeans for the hook. Or, create your own color scheme and arrangement using other candies.

The pirate hook cake is a real treat for a child who loves pirate movies or dressing like a pirate. All the party guests will rush to line up for cake!
