Movies Made Available for Netflix Instant Viewing on January 1, 2012…And Some Will Be Gone by April

A new year means a new load of films made available for instant streaming from Netflix. Here is a look at some movies made available on January 1, 2012 that may not even be around come winter so check the expiration date when you add these movies to your Netflix queue.

The African Queen

Netflix will make an April Fool of you if come looking to stream “The African Queen” after April 1, 2012. You only have a quarter of the year to catch the film that brought Humphrey Bogart his only Academy Award. Bogey’s best is most assuredly not “The African Queen” and I personally believe director John Huston is among the most overrated in Hollywood history, but you can’t call yourself a true fan of movies without catching this action movie at least once.

Blue Hawaii

Once you put “Blue Hawaii” into your Netflix queue, you will want to make sure you also don’t become a fool by putting it off until the second quarter of the year. “Blue Hawaii” is one of the prototypical Elvis Presley movies after he gave up trying to become serious about being a movie star. The movie itself is just another tale of Elvis, girls and songs, but you might be interested to know that the soundtrack album spawned by this Elvis flick was the number one selling platter of the year.

Rollerball

In the not too distant future, “Rollerball” will be taken off the Netflix instant streaming queue. In fact, better catch this James Caan action movie while you can; a month from January 1, 2012 and this bizarre exercise in a great idea that wasn’t a great movie will be gone. The major problem of “Rollerball” is that the futuristic sport itself gets such a surprisingly short shrift.

Kill the Irishman

Put “Kill the Irishman” into your Netflix queue and settle in for the long haul. If you put this movie into your instant streaming list on the first day of 2012, you will have 469 days in which to procrastinate before opportunity is lost. “Kill the Irishman” is a hard hitting expose of the Cleveland mafia. Yeah, yeah, who even knew Cleveland had a mafia, right? Watch it and see for yourself.

Mars Needs Moms

Meet the movie that killed, at least for awhile, Disney’s ill-conceived plan to remake “Yellow Submarine.” The spectacular failure of this animated movie to find an audience caused Disney to reconsider the wisdom of ultra-realistic animation. If you can do it with live actors, why on earth would you even need to do it with animation that looks like live actors? See for yourself if “Mars Needs Moms” was really bad enough to sink another pigment of the imagination.
