Money-Starved Americans Push Mitt Romney Toward Nomination

COMMENTARY | The American people are stuck in dead-end jobs, fighting to pay their mortgages to prevent foreclosure and pulling their children out of private schools because they simply can’t afford the tuition. The Great Recession, as our nation’s current financial struggle has been termed, is on the doorstep of every American voter. Despite the fact that multiple names are in the hat for the Republican nomination, Mitt Romney is clearly winning the votes, but are Americans voting for the candidate or his pocketbook?

Mitt Romney Understands the American Struggle

The major push behind Mitt Romney’s campaign is the fact that he claims to understand the struggle Americans are facing with reduced income, fewer opportunities and less money to provide the basic necessities of life. Romney vehemently states that President Obama has lost his connection with the American people. “I just don’t think that President Obama understands America…I don’t think he gets what’s happening in this country.” President Obama may not be as connected with the American people as he was four years ago during his “Change” campaign, but can the American people connect any better with a candidate who’s spent more than $12 million as of September, 2011, on his campaign message?

Where, Oh Where Has That $12 Million Gone?

How does a Presidential candidate spend $12 million in just three months? According to the Federal Election Committee, Romney did not spend the money supporting his fellow Americans. He spent the money marketing his message toward the very people who have too little money to support themselves and their families during the Great Recession.

During the months of July to September, 2011, Mitt Romney spent about $80,000 a month on living expenses — that’s more than the average American earns in a year. He spent $3 million on direct-mail marketing and another $3 million on consultants hired to help him tailor his message to the very people who want their President to help them earn a better way of life.

Where is the Money Coming From – the American People?

The money behind the powerhouse campaign of Mitt Romney is not coming from the people he claims to support; it is coming from big banks and Wall Street. Corporate sponsors for the Mitt Romney campaign include Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley. These same companies are currently working with image consultants to ease the negative outlook huge Wall Street bonuses cause with the American people.

Why Do Americans Support a Candidate Backed by Wall Street?

Money is the main factor behind the Mitt Romney campaign. His team is focused on a three-level marketing approach — contact by mail, contact by phone and contact in person. This is the same campaign strategy most presidential hopefuls use, but most candidates don’t have tens of millions of dollars invested in marketing to a group of people trying to make ends meet. Mitt Romney will win the presidential nomination for the Republican Party, but the force behind his nomination is the very thing the American people desire the most — money.
