Mitch Albom: The Novelist that Will Change Your Life

If there is one thing that I will never be tired doing, it would be reading. Reading is one of my most treasured “me-time” moments. It’s something that I try to do everyday to relax me after a very tiring day. Reading is a very magical activity too. Reading a book introduces me to different places, culture, habits, people and emotions. Aside from that, it also educates me. My favorite authors make me see the world through their eyes. One of my favorite authors is Mitch Albom.

Mitchel David Albom or, simply, Mitch Albom is the best selling author of Tuesdays with Morrie, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, For One More Day and Have a Little Faith: A True Story. He is an American best-selling author, journalist, screenwriter, dramatist, radio and television broadcaster and musician.

The earlier part of Mitch’s career was focused on music. It was his original dream to be a musician and he made it real. He played in different bands way back his high school and college life. He was also able to become a piano player and singer in Europe. When he transferred to New York, he developed an interest in journalism but he still didn’t give up his passion for music. He writes as a columnist during the day and at night, he works in the music industry to support himself.

To really get inside the journalism world, he enrolled into Columbia University’s prestigious Graduate School of Journalism. To support himself, he took baby sitting work, piano playing at night and a part-time job with SPORT magazine. Sports writing started his lifelong career in Journalism.

Today, his books already sold 30 million copies around the globe. He became my favorite novelist after reading Tuesdays with Morrie. This non-fiction novel was published in 1997. It’s a true story of Mitch’s retired sociology professor, Morri Schwartz, and his relationship with his students. Its story was also made into a movie. What I liked the most about his novel is that it opened my eyes on how I should treat older people. Before reading this, I used to hate my grandparents for asking too much attention. But after finishing this book, I realized that they only need to be loved. I also realized how important it is to value every time spent with a person before he dies.

Tuesdays with Morrie changed my attitude on treating and dealing with older people. I now treat them with utmost respect, love and care. I treasure and make the most of every time I spent with the elders, especially my grandparents, and even the people that are important in my life. Because of this life-changing novel, Mitch became my favorite novelist and I started following all his works since then.
