Math, the Beginning

Mathematics- The future…
Math has been around for ages, and this day and age many find math tedious, boring, and out-dated. I’m here to tell you different. Math is a beautiful thing and without it we would be cavemen! Mathematics as defined by Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary is ” the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generali zations”. Math ranges from simply adding numbers to as complex as it can get! No matter how much math you already know, where you are, or who you are, WE ALL need MATH.

I want to make math fun and enjoyable as well as making it understandable to all. Most people hate math just as they hate broccoli or spinach, etc.. We are “forced” to take it because it’s “good for us”. Now, it’s time to change your thinking of Math and hopefully make you enjoy it a little more!

The first thing about enjoying math is actually knowing what it is. It isn’t about memorizing formulas or equations but rather it’s problem-solving, deducing truth, and exploring change.

The next thing is to actually apply math in real-life. There’s no point in learning math if we’re never going to use it, right? Right, however we do use math and very often. It’s about problem-solving isn’t it? – so use Math to solve your problems! Math can be used in anything from: finding the amount of change, debt, discounts, timing, speed, weather, music, art, science, retirement, cooking, home decorating, constructing, building, improving, discovering, and so much more! If math is used every single day of our lives, it would probably be smart to know it and how to use it.

One thing that may help some is learning the history behind math. Why might this help, you may ask. Well for some, like me, history isn’t fun and extremely boring. However, learning how a formula came to be or why it came to be may actually help you instead of just memorizing or looking at a formula. This is for people who want to know the who, why, and how of math.

A very important concept for understanding math and why it’s neat is applying it to other subjects. Relating math to other subjects can be extremely helpful and can illustrate why math is important. Math can be applied in almost every subject: from art, to architecture, to business, to cooking, to music, philosophy and science.

The last resort is to just hang in there. Math is like learning chess, or a foreign language; it becomes more interesting over time. Just like learning a new instrument, math is never rewarding till you have made a long term commitment to it.

I hope all this math talk hasn’t bored you to sleep, but I’m 100% sure that math is the future and getting people to like it is going to be vital for our nation, economy, and the world.
