Los Angeles and Hollywood Movie Events from Oct. 28 to Nov. 3, 2011

Hollywood celebrities strut their stuff on the red carpet this week at the historic Grauman’s Chinese Theater, and the Twilight trio – Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner – get immortalized in cement. Also, film festivals featuring German, Italian, African-American and Chinese films continue around town through the week .

The big events this week take place next Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 2 and 3, starting with a Special Premiere of “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” (2011) at the Chinese Theatre. The very next night, even more stars will walk the Red Carpet to view Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar” premiere at the Opening Gala of the 25th annual AFI Fest. Tickets are distributed through the studios but anyone can view the celebs at 6925 Hollywood Boulevard. Arrivals begin between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The Egyptian Theater presents “If Not Us, Who” (2011) and Stopped on Track,” a 2011 winner at Cannes as part of the German Currents series, a must-see screening for fans of “Baader-Meinhhof Complex” (2009). Director Anres Veiel will attend. German Currents series. 6712 Hollywood Blvd., 7:30 p.m. Cost is $11.00.

“Welcome Home, Brother Charles” (1975) airs at the Bill Wilder Theater, with director Jamaa Fanaka in person. Also, “Gidget Meets Hondo” (1980), a short filmed in response to the LAPD’s shooting of Eula Love in 1979. L.A. Rebellion: Creating a New Black Cinema series, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., 7:00 p.m., $9.00.

“Bitter Rice” (1949) produced by Dino De Laurentiis, and “Without Pity (Senso Pieta)” (1947) co-written by Federico Fellini will screen as part of UCLA’s Days of Glory: Masterworks of Italian Neo-Realism at the Billy Wilder Theater, 7:30 p.m., $10.00.

USC’s “Outside the Box (Office)” presents “A Simple Life.” the Official Entry from Hong Kong for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars, part of the Chinese American Film Festival showcasing over 100 films through Nov. 26 at theaters around Los Angeles and San Francisco. 900 W. 34th Street at 5 p.m., free.

“Paisan” (1946), a special nitrate print of Director Roberto Rossellini’s earliest experiments in film about WWII Italy. Days of Glory: Masterworks of Italian Neo-Realism. 7:30 p.m. at the Billy Wilder Theater, $10.

Mickey Rourke will have his hand and footprint ceremony at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, 6925 Hollywood Blvd., 11 a.m. Free.

Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011

John Lasseter, director of “Toy Story,” will appear in person to receive his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, 6834 Hollywood Blvd., 11:30 a.m. Free.

Wednesday. Nov. 2, 2011

“Restrepo” (2010) and The Tillman Story” (2010), two movies about soldiers in Afghanistan, will screen at the Linwood Dunn Theater. Directors Sebastian Junger and Amir Bar-Lev, respectively, will take questions. 1313 Vine Street, at 7:00 p.m. Free.

Q&A with director Trisha Ziff follows a screening of her award-winning documentary “The Mexican Suitcase,” (2011) about finding historic photographs from the Spanish Civil War. 7:00 p.m. at The Ray Stark Theater, 900 W. 34th St. Free.

Actress-director Christina Beck presents “Perfection,” an Independent Film market nominee for Screenplay of the Year in a sneak preview at the Eygptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd. 7:30 p.m., $11.00.

Thursday. Nov. 3, 2011

Grauman’s Chinese Theatre honors the stars of the Twilight Saga – Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner – by immortalizing their hands and feet in cement at a 10 a.m. ceremony on Hollywood Blvd.
