Kids’ Thanksgiving Cornucopia Treat

Sometimes, we get caught up in preparing the Thanksgiving dinner, calling everyone to see who’s coming, decorating the table to look its best for the holiday, and otherwise taking care of holiday business. Kids enjoy Thanksgiving, too, but they’re often pushed to the background, since there are so many other things going on at the time. But they’ll feel like it was all worth it when they’re presented with the gorgeous and delectable meal – the turkey, dressing, pie. And, when it comes to getting the kids’ table ready, you still want to do something special for them. While the adults have beautiful napkin rings, and elegant place settings, the kids’ can have cornucopias. They’re easy to make and can be filled with anything you want.

You won’t hear any complaints from the kids when they sit down to their table, which features a cornucopia on each plate. Lay a paper doily on a plate to get started. A sugar cone – made to hold ice cream – is the perfect cornucopia. The sugar cone is the type that is pointed at the end. Shaped almost like a cornucopia, and with a color similar to one, it’s the perfect choice for making the special treats for the kids this Thanksgiving.

Cut a piece of narrow satin ribbon to be long enough to wrap around the top of the cone, plus a couple extra inches. Put a dot of frosting on the top, side of the cone, and stick the end of the ribbon to it, going back about an inch from the very end. Wrap the ribbon around the cone, put a dot of frosting on the first end of the ribbon, and stick the second end of the ribbon to it, so that they overlap each other. Put another dot of frosting on the area where the ribbons meet, and stick a candy corn or other accent to it.

Fill the cone with cereal, candy, small fruit, marshmallows, and other goodies. For the best look, fill the cone, then let some of the treats spill out onto the plate. Use tube frosting to write a name on the side of each cornucopia; this is optional. If you don’t have any tube gel you can put frosting in a sandwich bag, snip the corner, and pipe the lettering onto the side of the ice cream cone. The adorable and delicious cornucopias serve as the decorations for the kids’ table as well as the favors.
