Keeping Your Home Neat & Organized when Trying to Sell

When you have your house on the market to sell, it should always be kept in some kind of order because you just never know when you will get a call for a showing. This is a lot easier said than done though, especially if you have children and a pet.

Relatives of mine have their house up for sale and they get about a couple of showings a week. I visit quite often so I have been at their house many times when they have had a number of showings. I pretty much dread it when I hear that someone wants to come and see the house because I know what is involved in getting everything ready. If I can help it, I will put off my visit until after the showing because I just know the amount of work and effort that goes into this. When I am there, I usually help out anyway that I can to ease things a little. For the last showing that my family had, it took the lady of the house almost all day to clean and put things away. I said to myself, “There has to be a better way.” She does have four children which does not make it any easier.

The children do have to play with toys between showings. Everyone still needs to eat too, so there is going to be a mess on the floor. I have thought of a few ways in which my family can make it a little easier for themselves. Often, when they get a call from the Realtor, some do not give enough time even though originally you may ask for no less than four or five hours.

I have come to realize that vacuuming and mopping can be done at the last minute. If things are put away after use, it will be so much easier. When you have to take toys and things off the floors, that takes so much time. Just the other day, I was asked to clean the stove and the tub which I had no problem doing. As I was cleaning, the thought came to mind, how much easier it would be if these things were just kept up with. Then, on the day of the showing, you would not have to go crazy trying to do everything. Then it’s just a matter of doing a few quick things like taking out the garbage or putting dishes in the dishwasher.

As I said, it is not easy with four kids and a pet. However, you must come up with a plan so that you are not working so hard and tiring yourself the day of the showing. It literally took us all day to clean. Luckily, the showing was in the evening.
