Removing ads in Facebook is easier than you may think, and free to boot! Read on to discover how.
Ever since I started using Facebook, I’ve been more than annoyed by the amount of scams, spam, and viruses supported by their advertisers. A lot like Myspace, all Facebook cares about is money, so as long as the money is coming in, they are fine with their ads. While the rest of us are mere subjects to our friends who are foolish enough to believe the scams advertised. And suddenly oh look, your wall has a virus posted on it. Security isn’t a feature that can be added when you are allowing anyone, and everyone advertise whatever they wish.
To remove ads in Facebook, you will need Firefox any version will do, or Chrome. Download the add on, called Adblock Plus and be sure to add a filter. I enjoy “EasyList (English).” There are plenty of other choices, but I’ve found the first the best.
Adblock plus is not the only thing I use to remove ads in Facebook. I also use NoScript. Adblock Plus, and No Script work hand, in hand at removing anything that may come your way on Facebook. From Java Script to Flash, Adblock and NoScript block them all.
Should you eventually see ads on Facebook, you may need to go to Tools, then Adblock Plus Preferences, click on Filters, then click “Update All Subscriptions.” Then click “Apply” then “OK.”
There are several downfalls to using Adblock Plus, and No Script. If you play games on Facebook, you will have to add filters, or even more blocks. An example of this, I play Farm Town, and in Farm Town ads are well known to carry Viruses, Spyware, Malware, Trojans, and even redirects. It’s horrible because you will be in the middle of helping a friend, and WHAM all of a sudden you are viewing spam, and you clicked no banner advertisement.
Also should you wish to refresh a website, chances are Firefox won’t, you will still be viewing the cache. Some how, some way, NoScript prevents you from getting fresh pages. It’s annoying if you are a web designer, because when you do an update sometimes you don’t get it. I believe it’s a glitch that hopefully in some later version will be fixed.
Another downfall is if you don’t know much about the removing internet ads, or any web design, you are pretty much guessing at what to unblock to get things to load, games, giveaways, you name it. It’s good to have a friend that uses both NoScript, and Adblock Plus that knows HTML and of course plays the same games as you. That way you can just ask for help at removing Facebook ads, instead of fumbling about.
