How to Practice Self Regulation

Learning and practicing self regulation is important especially for children. Your school and home are the first training grounds in which you can practice self regulation. It enables children to engage in mindful, intentional and thoughtful behaviors in order for you to control your impulses and helps you to become capable of doing something that is needed. Here are some of the opportunities on how you can practice self regulation in school and at home.

Follow the rules that are given and monitored by somebody else.
There are certain rules in school that children should follow. Some of these rules include: listening to the teacher while the class is going on, keeping quiet inside the school library and avoid being tardy in class. At home, some of the rules given by your parents include: limiting TV time during school days, helping out with the household chores and showing respect to every member of the family. These rules given will help you to control yourself at home and in school. They will teach you on how to be obedient and avoid doing things that would not be good for yourself and to others.

You can set rules with your fellow children and monitor how those rules are followed. Even when you are playing with your neighbors and classmates, you can practice self regulation . You can set rules among yourselves and ask your playmates if they are agreeable to these set of rules. You can check from time to time if these rules are being followed so you will maintain order and harmony within your group. When playing, you can set a rule that everyone should take turns in playing the jumping rope or avoid cheating when playing board games. You can also tell them that anyone who does not follow the set of rules or violate them, will not be invited to join next time. Practicing self regulation is important for a child to learn.

Apply the rules to yourself. You also need to apply certain rules for yourself. In school, you should see to it that you are done with your seatwork before you go out and take your snack. You should also listen first to your teacher’s instructions before doing your seatwork or group work. It is important that you follow whatever your teacher instructs you to do. You should also limit playtime when you are in school. At home, it is also important that you listen what your parents tell you. You should also set rules for yourself like promising yourself that you will only watch TV after you are done with your assignments or assign yourself with some of the household chores that you are capable of doing. These set of rules will serve as your reminder in order for you to be a good student in school and a responsible child at home.

It is important that practicing self regulation is monitored by your parents and teachers. These people are capable of helping you on how to become more responsible. They will be able to contribute positive things that can help you in your emotional, intellectual and social development.
