How to Make Paper Mash, Also Known as Paper Clay

Make paper mash at home using everyday household items. This wonderful paper clay dries very hard and looks similar to porcelain when dry. Replace paper mache with paper mash to create a strong and durable craft item.

Things You’ll Need:

Newspaper or other recyclable paper
Paper shredder
Water
Strainer
1 gallon pot
Slotted spoon
Measuring cups
Measuring spoons
Electric mixer
Wheat flour (organic is the best, not self-rising)
Antiseptic mouthwash
Cookie sheet
Plastic container with lid

Instructions:

Step 1 – Shred the newspaper or other recyclable paper. The amount needed for one batch is 8 packed cups.

Step 2 – Place the shredded newspaper in the sink and cover with warm water. Allow the newspaper to soak for 20 minutes.

Step 3 – Pour 8 cups of water into a one gallon pot. Bring the water to a rolling boil.

Step 4 – Remove the newspaper strips from the sink and strain. Do not press the excess water from the strips. Place the 8-cups of soaked strips in the boiling water. Stir occasionally. Turn down the flame and simmer for 30 minutes.

Step 5 – Remove the pot from the heat. Pour the paper fiber through a strainer. Do not press out the excess water.

Step 6 – Place the paper back into the pot. Add 1 cup of wheat flour. Heat at a low heat until the mixture stiffens. Stir occasionally. This will take from 15 to 45 minutes depending on the amount of water left in the paper fibers. The mixture is done when it forms standing peaks.

Step 7 – Remove the pan from the heat. Add 1 cup wheat flour and 1 tablespoon of antiseptic mouthwash. The mouthwash keeps the paper mash from molding. Mix thoroughly with an electric mixer.

Step 8 – Place the mixed paper mash on a cookie sheet to cool. When cool, use or place in a plastic container with a lid for storage.

Store unused paper mash in the refrigerator for up to one month.
