Cream foundations tend to be formulated with emollients, making them a favorable choice for mature skin or those plagued with flaky skin. If you are a beginnner in applying cream-based makeup, then you might be confused as to the right way of applying cream foundation.
Step 1: Start with a clean canvas. Before applying your cream foundation, make sure that your face is clean. Use your favorite facial cleanser to remove any dirt. A mild cleanser that is pH balanced will ensure that the mantle on the skin stays intact, which will help prevent any dry spots from appearing on the face. A mild facial exfoliator will help remove dead skin cells that can impede the cream foundation from adhering onto your skin. Apply a mild toner with a cotton ball to remove any remnants of facial cleanser.
Step 2: Prep the skin. After cleansing the face, apply a moisturizer that has an SPF of at least 15. If you have oily skin, then use a light moisturizer that is formulated without oil. Some people who are affected with oily skin tend to skip the moisturizing part of their skin care regimen. A moisturizer will help prevent excessive oil production. Moisturizers will help maintain optimal moisture levels on the surface of the skin. Also, makeup will last longer on skin that is supple and soft. Allow the moisturizer to sink into the skin for a few minutes before applying the foundation.
Step 3: Prevent contamination of makeup. Scoop a bit of the cream foundation onto the back of the hand. Gently massage the product onto the hand. The friction will warm up the cream foundation, making it easier to apply to the face. Putting some foundation onto the back of your hand with a small scoop will also prevent you from contaminating your cream foundation.
Step 4: Apply the cream foundation. Start applying the cream foundation onto the face with a stippling brush. A stippling brush is designed to lightly apply cream and liquid foundations onto the face, creating a natural finish. Push the brush head onto the product that is on the back of your hand and start applying it onto your face by using a stippling motion. Keep applying this onto your face until you reach a coverage that you are satisfied with. Try to stay away from cotton sponges when applying cream foundation. Most of the product will be soaked into the cotton ball, instead of it being on your face.
Step 5: Use a setting powder. Set the cream foundation with a bit of face powder. Face powder will increase the longevity of the cream foundation, as well as help remove excessive shine. Always remove the make up at night, right before bed.
