How I Saved $250 With a Library Card

Listen to this stat. This year I saved at least $250.00. How did I do this? By getting myself a library card. What a gem for a reader like me. I had a library card throughout grade school and high school. Somewhere along the line, I forgot about this diamond in the rough. The good news is that I am revisiting this free resource and reading more than ever.

Let me explain how this savings came about. In the past, I spent a good amount of money on book purchases. And, I was paying full price. A few years ago, a friend of mine told me about an online used book store she used to buy her books. I decided to check it out. At my fingertips, new and used books were available to me at quite a discount. I jumped on it. I couldn’t believe my luck. At full price, I was spending over $500.00 a year on books. With the used books, at times, I could cut that figure in half.

This brought up a new issue. Where am I storing them? I had stacks of books. Do you throw books away? Is that proper treatment of a hobby I enjoy so much. In the midst of this conundrum, a genius of a man suggested I get a library card and donate the books. My jaw dropped, for two reasons. One, it was a brilliant idea. Two, why didn’t I think of it?

The good news about using the library is any book I want is available to me. If my library branch does not have it, they search all branches in the city and get it for me.I have access to books from twenty years ago as well as books that are hot off the press. And it is all done online. The best news about using the library is I am saving over $250.00 this year on book purchases and I haven’t given up a thing.
