Hopi Tribe Commemorates 9/11 with Ceremony Honoring First Responders and Military

The Hopi Tribe honored first responders and military during a ceremony held in remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy, which happened 10 years ago.

“On September 9 in 2001 no one had any idea of what was in store for our great country and those serving our nation,” said Hopi Tribe Chairman LeRoy N. Shingoitewa. “In honor of all that they have done over the past 10 years, and continue to do on our behalf, we wanted to hold a special ceremony recognizing their commitment to our country’s safety.”

Held in conjunction with National Preparedness Month, the offices of the Hopi Chairman and Vice Chairman invited the public to attend this special ceremony recognizing local first responders and men and women serving in the military.

A flag was raised by local first responders, master of ceremonies Geno Talas of Hopi Veteran Services opened the program with a brief welcome, while Hopi Tribe Chairman LeRoy Shingoitewa, Hopi Police Department representative Randall Begay and Hopi Emergency Response Team representative Roger Tungovia, among others, each said a few words, followed by the closing prayer by Antone Honanie, governor of Kykotmovi Village.
