While you won’t get a delicious pineapple fruit like they grow in Hawaii, you can still plant a pineapple indoors and get a lovely plant. In fact, if you live in a nice tropical climate (like Florida, Alabama, or anywhere hot and humid), you may actually end up with not only a pineapple plant, but an actual little pineapple as well that you can eat! Either way, yes, you can plant a pineapple and get a nice little pineapple plant out of it, even if you live in Alaska.
If you have a sunny window and can keep a certain area nice and warm all day long, your pineapple that you plant will grow and thrive. To grow a pineapple plant, simply plant the top of the pineapple in a jar of water until it sprouts, then transfer the sprouting plant into a pot of moist soil. If you can keep the pineapple sprout in a sunny window and keep it nice and moist and warm in the area the pineapple sprout is in, it will soon grow into a fun and awesome pineapple plant, which looks a lot like a palm tree. A fun and tropical plant you can have in your home, simply by planting that pineapple top instead of mulching it or throwing it away!
Make sure to plant just the top of the actual pineapple plant, not the green spiky leaves on top of it. And don’t expect that pineapple plant to grow overnight, either, and start producing fruit for you. Pineapple plants just produce one flower, and they have to be nearly 3 feet tall before they will produce a bloom that will turn into a pineapple. This process actually takes about 2 years, and will only give a fruit if you actually live in a warmer area where the plant may have grown naturally.
However, how fun would it be to grow your own pineapple plant indoors? You’re just going to throw away that pineapple top anyhow, and in 2 weeks you’ll actually see the sprouts and plant coming up if you plant your pineapple top while it’s still fresh. A fun project, and it makes that expensive pineapple that you bought that much more worth it in potentially bringing you a fun tropical plant for you to enjoy!
note: pineapple plants thrive better if they have an acidic environment, so if you have rotting apples, mix some into the soil and your pineapple plant will just love it!
