Although many musicians may disagree, every musician, whether budding or seasoned, could benefit from a rudimentary education in Classical music. From learning how to read sheet music and understanding musical tempo language, to acquiring a knowledge of music theory and how to better their live performances, an education in Classical music provides a solid foundation for musicians. Here is a look at why every performer could benefit from an education in Classical music.
Music Theory
As a music student, the thought of going into a classroom for a music theory course seemed like a mind-numbing task. My 15-year old mind thought, “Why do I have to understand the theory, as long as it rocks?” Fourteen years later my thinking is very different. Understanding the theory behind the music helps create future pieces of art in the same vein.
History
Understanding the history of music is greatly important. The long history of music can teach much to musicians, whether they are just embracing their talents or if they have devoted their life to the craft. Learning the styles of a bygone era can influence your work today, and make your work stand out from others.
Sheet Music
Many musicians learn to play by ear, but it is also equally important to learn how to read sheet music. If you are approached to play a piece for a venue, it is likely that you will be provided with sheet music. In order to play the piece to its highest potential, an education in reading sheet music is a must.
Musical Tempo Language
Along the same line as learning to read sheet music is understanding what musical tempo language is. It is one thing to play the notes on the page, it is another entirely to adhere to what the musical tempo language suggests. In the upper left hand corner of most compositions is the musical tempo language. It is typically written in Italian and it tells the musician the speed or tone in which the piece should be played. Musical tempo language sets the mood for the entire composition.
Inspiration
As a music student, I can vouch that gaining an understanding of music theory and Classical music history helped inspire me as a musician. It can be easy to get wrapped up in the music of today, and forget about the people who helped to forge the path to modern music.
