Find Great Skiing in West Virginia at Winterplace Ski Resort

Winterplace Ski Resort is a small resort that attracts skiers of all skill levels and ages and is ideal for 2-4 days of skiing. Somewhat isolated, the closest main grocery and civilization is about thirty minutes away, so make sure to stop for fuel and load up on supplies and groceries when you come off the main highways to beat on-slope prices. Plenty of families visit here, but college-aged and youth groups also frequent this destination.

Skiing

Near the rental area of Winterplace, several beginners’ areas can be found where lessons area also given. 90 acres provide plenty of slopes to explore, with the best run starting at the very top of the mountain, winding through a variety of easy, intermediate, and advanced trails all the way to the bottom of the basin. If you veer onto the trail called Country Roads, make sure to pick up lots of speed because the area is very flat, almost like a cross-country skiing area. Also, be aware that some areas of the mountain get very crowded, especially at the top of the snow tubing hill where skiers gather to watch. Another congested area is at the bottom of the basin where three lifts all begin. Most of the mountain is open all day and night, and night skiing is included with the purchase of a full day ticket.

Other Activities

The aforementioned snow tubing happens at West Virginia’s largest snow tubing park, which also has a separate kiddie area. Two terrain parks are available for tricksters, plus several restaurants can be found on the mountain, such as Mountain Mama’s Food Court, where you will find karaoke entertainment and typical cafeteria fare like hot chocolate, warm soups, and pizza, located at the front of the resort; the Mountain House is a similar facility located mid-mountain. Try the Snowdrift Lounge for cocktails, live music, and streaming video of skiers or Almost Heaven for panoramic mountain views. For more of a restaurant experience, visit Mickey’s Mountain Café, serving both Mexican and Italian cuisine near the front of the resort.
