Using role-plays designed for EFL and ESL can dramatically improve your students’ ability to speak in English. Here are three free role-plays that you can immediately make use of.

FORCED TO LIVE ON A DESERTED ISLAND

Tell students that they’re going to live on a deserted island, and, that they can only bring five objects with them. No food or beverages are allowed as part of their answers. Give students enough time to think of some ideas and then invite them to share the objects they chose. Encourage students to speak about the reasoning behind their choices.

TO REPORT OR NOT TO REPORT YOUR COLLEAGUE

You work in the warehouse of a company that specializes in Logistics. You work together with five other people. You’ve been working for the company ten years, and you love your job. One day, as you’re about to finish your shift, you notice one of your colleagues loading a few cartons of pens, paper and other stationary supplies into his car. You confront him. He tells you that they’re for his own personal use and that he would appreciate if you didn’t tell anybody. What do you say and do?

A ROOM TO RENT

You’re looking for a room to rent. You read a description of a room in the classified section of the local newspaper. The description of the room seems appealing. Call the person who placed the ad and ask about the room. What you say?
