Early Winter Arrives in New Jersey

At first glance looking out of your window, you may think that it is the end of December already. We are however only in the month of October, and New Jersey has already been slammed with it’s first snow storm. That’s right, a snow storm. Normally during October early November you still see the beautiful leaves of Fall, now we are face to face with a mix of rain and snow. According to news reports it is a Nor’easter.

Many have not even started making the necessary winter preparations on their homes and vehicles. There really is however, no time for that now. The heavy rain and snow mix has already caused trees to topple down, which means there may be power outages later in the day. Since the roots of the trees are already loose from all the rain in recent weeks, it is really no surprise that the trees are starting to topple. No matter how many years you have lived in New Jersey, you probably can not recall a time when snow arrived in October. Many may not have thought much about the initial snow reports, but now they are probably thinking differently.

Since the temperature will continue to drop into the evening hours, take the time to put some rock salt, or ice melting substance on your steps. This way you will not wake up to a patch of ice in the morning. Also try not to open your refrigerator door too often just in case you end up losing power, and check your flashlights for batteries. Avoid trying to rush to the store, and instead just work with what you have in your home. Since the storm has already started the only other thing you can do is start digging out some of your snow gear from last year. This would include ice scrapers, shovels, and of course boots. You are probably going to need them to clean off your vehicles, and clear the walkways. Of course there are many children in the area, who welcome the snow, even if it is a little early. So does this mean that we can expect a bad winter? It’s hard to tell, but one thing is for sure and that’s the fact that it really does put a damper on the Fall season for some in New Jersey. If you live in New Jersey why not post your thoughts on the snow storm below.

After the storm

Now that the storm has passed and the snow has stopped falling in New Jersey, many are starting to assess the damage done. The Governor of New Jersey issued a state of emergency late last night due to dangerous conditions. Since the sun has just come up many areas are warning about flooding later in the day. There is a lot of ice on the roads, and sidewalks, and some trees have fallen, and are continuing to fall due to the weight of the ice, and snow. So the best thin to do this Sunday morning according to State officials is to just stay home, so that roads can be treated, and down trees can be removed.
