Does ‘The Lion King 3D’ Deserve Its Throne?

One of the greatest Disney films has returned to the big screen! “The Lion King” is back and this time with Disney Digital 3D! This masterpiece from the Disney vault is only seeing a limited release and may be the only chance for many to see it in theaters in all its glory. Has “The Lion King” stood the test of time or has it not aged well in these nearly two decades? What did Tennessee viewers think of Simba’s tragic childhood in 3D?

“It was a magical experience getting to see my all-time favorite Disney movie on the big screen. Simba’s tale is one of perseverance. It’s rare that you see a Disney character outright give up and run away. Simba did so and faced his fears when the time came. Scar had to be dealt with and was!” — Jonathan Guild, 33, Raleigh

“A masterpiece with no equal on the modern animated market. From the iconic music to the comedy relief offered by Timon and Pumba. ‘The Lion King’ harkens back to a time when Disney was still known for their cinematic magic. Nowadays they’ve lost their way…” — Nicole Nydweil, 30, Memphis

“Simba is so cute in 3D! I always wanted to see more of his childhood- or would that be cub-hood? Anyway, I adored it! I was really excited when I heard Disney was re-releasing this great movie with 3D! That big, juicy bug Simba ate looked even tastier in 3D!” — Rochelle Mark, 11, Memphis

“Before I praise what is still a very good movie, I have to start with one complaint. I just wasn’t impressed by the 3D. The inflated price tag was not worth the so-called 3D experience. Aside from that major letdown, the film still holds up great. I cried when Mufasa died just like last time and again when he appeared in the clouds.” — Sally Berea, 19, Memphis

“This film proves there will never be a grace period the likes of the Disney Renaissance again. Modern animated movies lack the charm and originality of movies like ‘The Lion King.’ I was in tears for a third of the film and I’m even fighting tears now. Beautiful.” — Clay Berea, 21, Memphis

“There’s something truly magical about Disney. Like Nintendo, everything they touch turns to art that will last throughout the ages. I truly hope that this 3D re-release attracts a generation that didn’t get to experience ‘The Lion King’ before. I was so proud to see Simba maturing into a man on the big screen again. Can’t you feel the love tonight?” — Thomas Massino, 21, Memphis

“I’d never bothered seeing this movie before- I admit that. I’ve never cared for animated movies that weren’t rendered in computer graphics. Hey- that’s just me. This… This is different. This heartwarming story transcends time and visuals.” — Cordillia Ranch, 17, Bartlett

“If there is one Disney movie that will always have a special place in my heart, it is ‘The Lion King.’ I still remember crying when I first saw it and continue to do so every time I see it. Mufasa’s death is the saddest moment of Disney history- easily beating out Bambi’s mom. My life was forever changed when I saw Simba’s tragic childhood and the fate of Mufasa. Seeing re-released in 3D made my year.” — Maxwell Reeves, 19, Bartlett

“I’ve always been a Disney fan. I still have a hug VHS collection of my favorite Disney classics. Seeing ‘The Lion King’ back on the big screen sent memories of my childhood flooding back to me. My dad would always take me to the theater when a new Disney film would come out. I was just a baby when I saw ‘Lion King’ the first time in theaters, so seeing it on the big screen as an adult was really moving for me. But sitting in the theater with dad, I felt like a kid again.” — Abbi Lio, 18, Memphis
