Does Communism Demoralize Countries?

After seeing this horrific video of Chinese adults ignoring a dying girl who got hit by a van at 2 years old (by the way, where was her mother), I wonder what Glenn Beck meant by stating that this is what Communism looks like (via an email sent out today through the newsletter I signed up for). Is it possible for Communism to be responsible for moral deteriorization of a country? Well, let’s take a look.

First, for those who do not know exactly what kind of government Communism is, let us define it, shall we? Alrighty then! While you can find the classic and “smart” definitions of Communism here, I prefer the more light-hearted, sarcastic definitions: “If a communist has two cows, he gives both to the government, and the government sells him some of the milk.” This is basically stating that everything is government property and they decide who gets what and when.

So the basic idea is that government rules everything in China. Therefore, they rule every person’s life as well. Keep this in mind as you continue reading. This equates to each person in China having little to no control over almost every aspect in their life. Add into that the culture of proper and correct marriage, shaming the family, etc. There is a ton of pressure on each individual to fly right first by government standards and then by family standards. The government is obeyed out of fear – if they are in control and make all the decisions then they make the punishments and hand out the judgments as well. Families are obeyed out of loyalty. It makes sense since their history dictates that their families are extremely close knit, and they are extremely aware of their ancestors, too.

For me, being from the most free country in the world, the idea that government could have this kind of control over my life is disheartening to say the least. If I had that kind of pressure from my family and the fear of governmental punishment if I screw up I would be a nutcase. I would be a robot. I would do exactly as asked and told regardless of how I felt because of fear. Some people do not fear, but everyone does at one time or another. Fear drives people into submission. Fear is the tool of the wicked who are in or want to be in power for selfish gain and pride.

Okay, so here we are in China. You are an individual and so am I. The year is 2006. I am an old woman and you are a younger guy. I fall off the bus, you help me and I blame you. After four (FOUR) trials, the government decides that common sense would dictate that since you were the first one off the bus and you were the one who was kind enough to bring me to the hospital (probably out of guilt, right?), then that MUST mean that you were the one who pushed me down. Now you have to pay up!

So, if you are an individual in China who hears about this – a good Samaritan helping someone gets sued (called the Nanking judge or Nanking Peng Yu) – the next time you see someone in need of assistance, chances are you are not going to help them out of the fear of the government blaming you without proper evidence. And depending on the condition of the person in need the punishment could range from a fine to jail time to a death sentence. I would say that THAT is pretty demoralizing.

Now take a step back and try to see this information as an all encompassing life that someone is forced to live unless they can get out of the country (fleeing would be seen as shameful). Do you have any hope? Do you feel you have a bright future that you determine? Or do you feel there is no point in trying to be different, yourself, something other than what the government tells you what to do? I would say this is extremely demoralizing. So, yes! Communism does demoralize countries in which the government runs those practices defined earlier – basically, control and fear.

This brings us back to the little girl hit by, not one but, TWO van drivers and all those people walking by ignoring her while she died. (By the way, she is in critical, but stable condition) Think of how demoralized and zombie-like you would have to be to just walk by a young child dying in the street? How cold would your heart have to be to just leave her lying there? After watching the video it is clear that there were some people who had a heart for life and did what they could to help the young girl. It is clear the mother was torn up about what had happened to her daughter. But, how torn up will the government of China be – the same country so many U.S. citizens claim we should try to imitate, be like? That is yet to be seen!
