December 5, 1933

Prohibition in the United States was simply, the 18th amendment, which banned the use of alcoholic beverages. It was first put in place January 16,1919 under the 18th amendment and was first made effected January 17,1920. The law was repealed under the 21st amendment on December 5,1933.

Prohibition was arguably a great success and a great failure at the same time. While it did successfully reduce the amount of liquor consumed in the nation, it did at the same time lead way to rampant underground, organized crime; much of which supplied liquor illegally to those that wanted it.

Prohibition rose in the United States do to a cultural divide; mainly between urban and rural values. Groups that called themselves “Dries” (those who favored prohibition) contributed the consumption of alcohol with corruption, violence, and personal sin. While, the “wets” (those opposed to prohibition) denounced the idea.

For 13 years the rights of Americans were taken away, a black eye we should all never forget. We should be thankful for the freedoms we have today, and never forget just how easily we can lose them which is why the 18th amendment is still on the Constitution today as a reminder of what can happen.
