Colors to Pair With Exposed Brick

Exposed brick in a home, in amounts as small as a fireplace or large enough to cover full walls, can be a striking feature when combined with colors that properly complement it. Your choice of paint color to pair with exposed brick dictates the tone of the room, so it’s important to be aware of the effect various colors have on brick.

Pale complements to brick’s brown-red include peaches and soft yellow, both of which create a calming space against the rustic look of brick. White or cream are still subtle complements that allow the brick to remain the main feature. Meanwhile, light blue and light green offer a bit more contrast while maintaining a subtle appearance.

Brick also lends itself to traditional decorating. Warm colors like orange, red and brown bring out the natural colors in brick. Navy and tan, on the other hand, complement the natural warmth in brick while allowing slightly more contrast.

If you prefer modern to conventional decorating, an exposed brick wall does not have to interfere with your plans. Contrast rustic red brick with walls of bright blue or teal. Dark purple provides a similarly contemporary complement without the boldness of such vivid colors.

Elegant decorating can incorporate brick as well with the use of metallics and neutral blacks and whites. Place metallic accents directly on brick and choose either black or white, depending on the brick’s undertones, to offset the brick.
