Mardi Gras, which this year falls on February 21, refers to the events of Carnival celebrations, which typically begin on or before Epiphany, and ending the day before Ash Wednesday and the events of Lent. Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of Lent. The religious part is typically held by Catholics and to a lesser extent, Eastern Orthodox religions. But to many, it’s just a time to celebrate and eat to excess! If you’re looking for something to do in the Colorado Springs area this Mardi Gras, here are some places to go.
Saturday, Feb. 18th, is the Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cook-off in Manitou Springs, starting at 8 AM. Gumbo judging starts at 10:45 AM, with public tasting at 11:15 AM. Two sample tastings is $1, though the event itself is free. The event takes place at Soda Park, at 1016 Manitou Ave., Manitou Springs. This is a fun family event, with a parade at the end of the Gumbo tasting, starting at 12 PM.
Stargazers Theatre, at 10 South Parkside Drive, is holding a Mardi Gras Party on Sunday, Feb. 19th. Doors open at 5 PM for the 6 PM show. Tickets are $8. Come listen to the music of Tribe, and then enjoy traditional food of Louisiana, which includes Bayou Red beans and Rice, Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, and King Cake for dessert! On Tuesday, Feb. 21st, SouthSide Johnny’s is holding their 21st annual Mardi Gras Party. Mardi Gras menu starts at 5 PM, with the band starting at 8 PM. SouthSide Johnny’s is at 528 S. Tejon St., in downtown Colorado Springs. Call 444-8487 for more info.
