Choosing a Diaper for Baby

If you are not feeling overwhelmed at being a parent, stand in front of the diaper aisle and you will. There are so many diapers and so many sizes it takes a whole row of a standard grocery store aisle just to display them all. The stores that have fewer diapers are so much easier to shop for baby. There are only a select few diapers to choose from.

As you stand in the diaper aisle looking at the vast choices, your only thought may be “OMG! What did I get myself into?”. Relax. The good news is choosing the “wrong” diaper is not going to be detrimental to baby’s well being. It may cause you unwanted clean up or extra baths for baby, but baby will be just fine in the end.

The most important thing to remember when choosing a diaper for your little one is changing the type of diaper baby wears could irritate baby’s skin. With that in mind, you need to find a diaper you think will be affordable to you, so you can continue purchasing them and comfortable for baby.

Most diapers are similar. If you choose a diaper that just will not work for your child, you can buy a different type immediately. Some diapers fit differently and you may just need to choose a different size of the same diaper.

Choosing a diaper based on size is easy enough. Diapers are sized so parents know the average weight a baby should be able to fit into the diaper. I found for my daughter if I bought a cheap diaper, I needed to go up a size for it to keep her dry. The bigger size seemed to fit her well too.

The expensive diapers were not without their own problems. I tried some name brands that although they said they were for a certain size and my daughter was in the middle of the weights, they were just too tight. Going up a size made the diapers sag in the crotch and not absorb wetness.

The inexpensive brand that I used the most was Parents Choice. It was extremely convenient for me to pick up while I was shopping at Wal-mart. Other inexpensive brands that I used in emergencies that worked just as well were Family Dollar’s generic diaper and CVS brand. I tried Huggies several times, but my daughter just could not wear them comfortably. It was such a hassle that I decided to just use the “cheap ones” that worked.

If the diaper irritates baby’s skin wash baby’s bottom as soon as possible. You can use Desitin on the baby for his or her discomfort. You can also try to use powder in the diaper. If the rash gets worse or will not go away, take baby to his or her pediatrician and change diaper brands.
