Chicago’s 2012 Cultural Plan Needs Residents’ Input

For years, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) has elevated the city of Chicago as a bright shining star for the world to enjoy. Our town is oozing with talent. Artistry at its finest is showcased for residents and visitors alike in our many exhibitions, plays, screenings, and cultural events you can attend all over this city.

We have it all–music of every genre, art, history, dance, film, fashion, and theater. The arts are the heartbeat of our city. Chicago prides itself on being the third largest creative economy in the U.S., employing over 150,000 people. Now, that’s pretty awesome! There are around 650 non-profit arts organizations that generate more than $2 billion each year. Chi-Town’s creative juices definitely flow, bringing tourists and new businesses, which in turn create more jobs for Chi-Town citizens. See what a little artistry can do?

To keep Chicago vibrant and culturally growing, DCASE needs your input. They are seeking your direction on developing the 2012 Chicago Cultural Plan.

This is not the first time Chi-Town citizens have been asked to submit their suggestions and ideas. The last time was back in 1986 when Harold Washington was mayor. Some of the ideas generated by Chi-Town residents helped to revitalize and redo Navy Pier, spiff up Theater Row in The Loop, and provide incentives for film projects.

Got a few great ideas? Share them and be a part of the planning. And, there are several ways you can let your voice be heard: social media, town hall meetings, and public forums.

Plan to attend any of four Town Hall meetings held during this month:

–Wednesday, February 15, 6pm-8pm
Columbia College, 600 S. Michigan

–Thursday, February 16, 6pm-8pm
Nicholas Senn High School, 5900 N. Glenwood

–Saturday, February 18, 10am-12pm
DuSable Museum, 740 E. 56th Place

–Tuesday, February 21, 6pm-8pm
National Museum of Mexican Art, 1852 W. 19th Street

In addition to the Town Hall meetings, an interactive website has been set up to receive your suggestions and allow further conversation. Just visit here.

Be a part of the plan. Join in on the conversation. Help the city of Chicago continue to grow and develop as a national gem of the arts. We’re going to let our light shine!

Chicago’s 2012 Cultural Plan will be unveiled this fall.
