Burgers in Brooklyn: A Guide to the Best

To say that Brooklyn offers a myriad of dining choices is an understatement. Currently, Brooklyn cuisine suffers from a major identity crisis. There are the blue-collar restaurants, mom-and-pop establishments that have become New York institutions because of their delicious specialties. On the opposite end of this spectrum are the newly established foodie bistros that offer haute cuisine with their modern, trendy decor in the newly gentrified areas of the borough. This intermingling of restaurants has brought more good than bad to the local food scene, though. And, because of this, the burgers in Brooklyn are some of the best in the East Coast.

DuMont Burgers

DuMont Burgers, an eatery along Bedford Avenue, serves a smaller, more informal menu than its parent restaurant, DuMont. Here, they offer two burgers: the house burger ($10.50), an 8-ounce patty on toasted brioche, and the DuMont Mini ($8), a 5-ouncer served on toasted ciabatta. Standard offerings on both burgers are Boston lettuce, red onions, and house-made pickles. You can also add on any of the following for free: avocado, caramelized onions, sauteed mushrooms, bacon, and any of their five cheeses. One of the best burgers in Brooklyn, DuMont Burgers is known for its buttery bun and juicy patty, albeit it’s a little underdone. I prefer the so-called Mini to the house because the sturdier ciabatta contrasts better against the soft, juicy meat. Also, try their salads ($7.50) and their desserts ($5, brownie, chocolate chip, and apple cobbler). Though they have a limited beer selection, grab a beer here and enjoy one of the best burgers in Brooklyn.

Diner

Diner is on every self-ascribed foodie’s radar as one the best restaurants in Brooklyn. Made famous by an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations” about this outer borough, Diner also boasts the best burgers in Brooklyn. Their grass-fed cheeseburger ($13, with fries) is topped with tomato, lettuce, and pickled red onions. Cooked to order, this burger is buttery, steak-y, and decadently juicy. They also have a reasonably priced (a third of Manhattan prices) and extensive wine list. If you find yourself in Billy-burg, try one of the best burgers in Brooklyn. Diner definitely lives up to the hype.

Peter Luger’s Steakhouse

Though this veritable New York institution is famous for its slab bacon and steaks, Peter Luger’s also has one of the best burgers in Brooklyn. To try their burger, you must come here during lunch (it’s not offered on their dinner menu). Order the standard burger ($8.95), but you can also add bacon ($2.95) and Muenster cheese ($1.50). This burger is a classic with its sesame-crusted bun and moist half-pound patty (beef blend of chuck and Luger’s signature porter steaks). Skip their lackluster fries and their complimentary steak sauce, as this no-frills burger can stand firmly on its own. If you are a certified burger aficionado, then bear the snooty wait staff and archaic decor at Peter Luger’s for one of the best burgers in Brooklyn.

You’ll find Peter Luger’s Steakhouse at 178 Broadway, Williamsburg.

67 Burger

Located in downtown Brooklyn near BAM, 67 Burger has one of the best burgers in Brooklyn. Though burger-centric, the menu is expansive, to say the least. You can choose from four different meats ($6.75): hamburger, turkey, grilled chicken, and veggie. Add a myriad of toppings ($0.50-$1.75), such as nine different cheeses, bacon, dijonaise, and braised onions to make a customized burger. If you prefer, you can choose from a selection of their pre-styled burgers. My favorite is the goat ($8.50, combination of hamburger, goat cheese, and red pickled onions). Their specialty, a combination of blue cheese sauce and bacon called the 67 Burger ($9.25), can be overpowering, and I wouldn’t consider it as one of the best burgers in Brooklyn on its own. But I would consider 67 Burger as definitely having the best burgers in Brooklyn as a whole.

Choose your toppings wisely, as some toppings may mask the true flavor of the patty. All the burgers at 67 Burger are flame-grilled, 100-percent chuck patties served on a sesame bun with tomatoes, sliced red onions, lettuce, and garlic pickles. The burgers are definitely run-down-your-arms juicy, and eat them with their delicious curly fries and a soda for a complete meal. 67 Burger offers the best burgers in Fort Greene and one of the best burgers in Brooklyn.
