Build a Fast and Easy Wine Rack

When looking at furniture prices, it’s easy to get discouraged. Even basic wine racks are expensive. Build this fast and easy wine rack in a day, and proudly display your bottles.

Hang it on a wall or stand it on a counter or in a cabinet. Each bottle is properly tipped so the wine stores properly.

This wine rack measures 2 feet by 4 feet, but you can alter this to fit your needs and the number of bottles.

You will need:

· Drill with bits and 4″ hole saw · Paint and primer, or stain and sealer · Four 2-by-2 pieces, each 6″ long · Eight each 2″ wood screws · Wood putty · Edge strip, ¾” and iron (optional) · Sandpaper in various grits · Table saw or circular saw · One sheet furniture grade ¾” plywood · Two pieces of 1-by-6, each 2 feet long · Compass, measuring tape and marker · Construction adhesive

Step One:

Cut two pieces of plywood, each 2 feet by 4 feet. Sand smooth, and sand the edges. Sanding as you go makes finishing go faster.

Step Two:

To make bottle placement easier, cut several 4″ circles of paper and place on the good side of one of the boards. You can configure the circles any way you choose. Remember to leave at least ½” between bottles.

Mark around the circles.

Step Three:

Using the hole saw, drill out the circles and set the waste out of the way. Place the drilled board on top of the second board, with the good side facing forward. Slide the bottom board so that ¾” is showing at the top.

Mark the holes through the spaces, and drill the holes.

Sand the holes.

Step Four:

Turn the front board over and place a 2-by-2 segment at each corner, standing up. Make sure the segments are flush with the sides of the board. Apply construction adhesive to the ends of the segments, and hold in place. When the adhesive takes hold, Drill pilot holes in each segment through the front and attach to the board with the 2″ screws.

Step Five:

Paint or stain the front, back and the pegs now. Allow to dry.

Attach the back by drilling through the back into the pegs. Apply construction adhesive to the pegs before drilling.

Step Six:

Attach the 1-by-6 segments to the top and bottom of the rack. This allows the rack to stand on the counter.

Step Seven:

Set or hang in place with the appropriate hangers for your wall, and fill with your favorite wine. The front holes are lower than the back.

Your friends and family will love your new wine rack. They’ll soon be dropping hints about anniversaries, graduations, Christmas, birthdays, etc. This is a gift they’ll enjoy, and it costs little to make.
