Book Review: Father to Son

“Father to Son” by Harry Harrison, Jr. published in 2000. It is an amazingly transformative book that presents life lessons on raising a son. “Father to Son” is small four-by-four book with about 300 pages packed full of practical advice that every father should give. Harrison brilliantly organized his advice by age and subject so the reader can easily find the advice that’s relevant or needed for the occasion. Fathers will reference “Father to Son” as he grows in maturity with his son. Father will notice the familiar tone of the advice. The information and principles are timeless and readers will recognize words of wisdom from his father and his father’s father.

Fathers today are competing against many distractions and need to be reminded that our sons need us to mentor and guide them. Proverbs 15:20 says “A wise son makes a glad father.” Harrison did a great job by providing fathers with a timeless guide for sharing good-old fashion wisdom to ensure that a father will have a glad heart. “Father to Son” is not very intimidating and most men will rediscover pleasant memories of their own childhood. Mothers, this one is worth giving away as a gift. Fathers, this one is worth picking up and reading.

For its easy to read and simplistic approach, and family friendliness, I’m giving “Father to Son” five out of five stars.
