Best Breeds for Guard Dogs

There are many factors that should go into how you choose the dog you are entrusting your safety with. Some of these factors include the size of your family and whether or not you have children or plan to. You may also want to take into consideration the area you live in and if the climate of your area is best for the breed you may choose. You do not want a dog that is better suited to hot climates living in Alaska and those suited for cold climates living in Florida. Also checking local laws to see if your area has banned specific breeds of dogs.

The German Shepherd always rates high in the top breeds to use in a guard dog position. The German Shepherd is smart, loyal and loving. While this breed is very loving to its “family” it is also highly protective especially of children which makes it a much sought after protector. It is also important to note that this dog will need an abundance of exercise to keep fit and happy.

The Great Pyrenees is a large imposing dog with its great head and shoulders and usually weighs in full grown at around 150 pounds. This breed is very loving and seems to thrive in a home environment especially those with children. The Pyrenees is an extremely loyal and capable dog with an abundance of courage not often seen and this breed will sacrifice itself to save its family.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is an excellent breed to train as a guard dog. With so many falsehoods floating around about the pit bull they are often overlooked in the capacity of a “pet” as they have been termed as being to vicious. Akita’s are an amazing breed that often resemble a wolf and are often sought after due to their cleverness and ability to rationalize the best way to handle a situation. They are also a very quiet dog and will have quite a surprise in store for any intruder to your home. They are not only loyal and smart but extremely loving and will need to have daily exercise and playtime.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback was originally bred to hunt lions in Africa but hopefully you will not need it to do that for you. The Ridgeback is not an aggressive animal but is extremely protective of its family and will need to be trained from birth in order to grow into the guard dog position.
