Ban on Communication in This Communication Age!

Freedom of expression is one of the many rights that a person living in a democracy is entitled to, with the country- India, claiming to be the biggest democracy in the world abstaining it’s people from voicing their opinions freely without the advent of facing any consequences makes the statement the politicians make every now and then of it being the “largest democracy” only contradictory.

This news has sent waves across the globe as in today’s age where everyone is entitled to have a say and it coming out from the very same minister is responsible for giving India it’s very own low cost tablet pc to each and every student especially in rural India, the fact that social media websites and forums are so popular among the youth is because we have had enough of all the scams, corruption and those artificial speeches of assurance of everything being stable, so if they can make those tall claims why can’t the people who elected them be allowed to make hate speeches, India has always been intolerant towards anyone who has the guts to put across their views in public no wonder then our artists have to face exile, their works being banned, burned all in the name of religious intolerance, when people are fed up of all these authoritarian ways, it’s only the internet where we can vent our frustrations at and if that is also taken away from us, then the Government should not find any excuse next time it’s deemed as going the China way.

I being a mass media student it is very important that we voice our opinions in all platforms of the media, to make people aware and the fact that India was functioning very well up until now even with hate speeches and obscene content on these sites should’ve been reason enough for the Government to concentrate on important issues such as poverty and other scams, where at one hand we have citizen journalism gaining mileage in India on the other hand when ordinary citizens who want to express their views freely on the net will have to think twice before saying something, yes we might not like how a certain minister is functioning and to get that frustration out to the whole world we might say a bad word or two, aren’t we entitled to?

If you’re born in a country it is your duty to pay taxes, to work towards enhancing the development of the country, if it’s a democracy who have the right to elect those who will run your country for you thus making it obligatory by default that the people can overthrow their government if not satisfied and also have say in the running of their country, it’s only man’s special gift to speak that’s what separates us from the animals, if that is taken away what’s the difference between an animal and humans! When we speak we show our intellect, which makes us supreme, the power of the written word is thousand times more than the slit of a sword, it can bring down empires that’s why a journalist is more powerful than the army, yes the common man may not know about sensitivity, but he certainly knows about his right to speak up, when we’re claiming to be developing and the next country to look out for, such actions by the government don’t put us up in the category of a developing country but makes us look really underdeveloped tied down by such low norms, the common man has a lot more on his head that is already killing him daily especially in all the cosmopolitans and now if one remark that does not deem “proper” according to the Government posted on one of the many websites there are out there intentionally or unintentionally will land him in jail, why?

Because he killed people, because he was a lobbyist, because he was involved in multi million scams, or in insider trading? – NO, simply because he put up two hate words online, he will have to face the consequences, some might say what’s the big deal? Simply don’t put up any such comments and keep it to yourself but till how long? When the volcano erupts we all know the consequences of it and so if the Government wants to go the authoritarian way then we should stop calling ourselves the biggest democracy and if the Government wants to stick to this title then such bans will do no good!
