Awakening

On the way to church
the twisted trees I pass are without green,
all color blown away by the winter wind.
The sidewalk is lined by muddy ruts
matted with fall’s bent, brown grass.
But the Easter sun rises up pink and coral
behind the tortured trunks
and through the dead grass shroud
peeks a lavender crocus.
