With Alabama only dropping to number 3 in the BCS Alabama fans and fans of a rematch between LSU and Alabama have hope that their dream national championship game will happen. But sorry Roll Tide fans but I don’t see how the BCS could justify sending the Tide to the national championship game no matter what scenario plays out at the end of the season.
(If LSU wins out, Alabama wins out, and OK State loses.) With previously ranked #4 Standford and #5 Bosie State losing yesterday has now opened the door for this possibility. Now only LSU and OK State are the last two undefeated teams left. So if OK State loses this should open the door for Alabama right? I say no, even with Alabama possibly being the best one loss team left in the field with the way the BCS is set-up you should have to be a conference champion in order to play in the national championship game. Yes the agrument could be made that you don’t have to be a division champion to win the Superbowl or have to be a conference champion to win the NCAA basketball tournament but this is why college football should switch to a playoff system. How could you justify sending the tide to the championship game over the big 12 champion if they also had one loss or the PAC 12 champion. Just like in the NFL rankings or college basketball seedings champions should be seeded higher than non champions. Also Alabama had their chance on the home field, with their crowd backing them to beat the LSU tigers and fell short. No matter how good the game was it makes me believe that they would have even less of a chance to beat LSU on a neutral site and almost no chance since the National Championship is in LSU’s backyard.
(If Alabama Wins out OK state wins out and LSU loses in the SEC Championship Game). This would make OK St number one and the only undefeated left. But then what would happen with Alabama and LSU? Since LSU beat Alabama they would have to be ranked ahead of Alabama. Also a team shouldn’t be penalized for playing in their conference championship game. So the only match-up that would make since would be LSU versus OK St.
The only way that Alabama should even be considered to get a chance to play in the National Championship game is if Arkansas beats LSU. This would give Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas all one loss all coming to each other and all at home. This would mean that the SEC West Champion would come down to who is ranked higher in the polls. Even though they all would be tied I believe that Arkansas would have to be ranked above LSU and Alabama because of the timing of the loses. We always say its better to lose early than late.
If I had to vote on which match-up I would like to see in the BCS national championship game it would be the SEC Champion verses the Big XII Champion. Even though everyone including me would hate to see a SEC team beat up on another conference team again, I doubt I could sit through another Alabama versus LSU match-up. At least we could spend the time off between the regular season and bowl season building up the hype of offense versus defense instead of talking about which QB isn’t going to make the mistake to lose his team the National Championship.
