Actor Character Development Tips – Delving Deep into the Script

If there is one thing I’ve learned throughout the past decade of working as a professional actor, it is the processes of creating a character is vastly unique and personal. While one method may work for one actor, the same method may not be nearly as effective as the next actor. No matter the approach you take as an actor to develop a character, there are certain rules that you should adhere to in order to help build a dimensional and interesting character.

As an actor, you must learn how to effectively delve deep into the script in order to read the subtext of your character and gain clues into the psyche of this “person” you will be portraying.

What the Writer Developed

One of the first steps in creating a well-rounded character is understanding the character the writer developed. While it is up to you to fill in the blanks when it comes to the hidden life and the physical interpretation of your character, you must understand what type of character the writer developed.

The only way to truly accomplish this goal is to truly read and analyze the script. Read the script at least two times without taking any notes. Upon the third read-through, have a notepad by your side and write down the key characteristics the writer placed within the script.

As you read the script for the third time, as yourself these two questions: What is the overall goal and purpose of the character? What is my character willing to do in order to accomplish this goal and purpose?

While these key characteristics may not encompass the entire truth of your character, they will act as a blueprint when it comes time to truly delve into the history and personality of the character.

Analyzing Your Character’s Relationship to Others

While you may think that you have a solid understanding of your character, you will only reach the truth of this “person” when you understand and analyze the character’s relationship with others. Make a list of all the character that your character interacts with within the script. Beside each of the character’s name, write a descriptive paragraph regarding his relationship and personal feelings for these other characters.
