About Radon Mitigation

Radon mitigation is another term for lowering the amount of radon that comes into the home and stays in the home. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers, according to the EPA. Radon levels in the home should be less than 4 lCi/L.

Radon Reduction

Cost of radon reduction depends on the design and the size of the home. The systems sold by contractors tend to reduce levels by 99 percent. You will need to keep the system maintained for it to stay in prime operating condition.

Radon Testing Kits

Radon is an odor-less gas that needs equipment to detect. There are two different types of radon testing kits. Active radon testing kits require power and provide hourly readings, testing continuously. Passive radon testing kits do not need power and are inexpensive. Officials in your area will be able to recommend which type is right for your home and conditions.

Radon Reduction Techniques

There are many different forms of radon reduction techniques like soil suction and soil communication test. Soil suction prevents radon from coming into the home by way of underneath the home. It vents it through pipes to above the house level so that it can be diluted and not enter the home. Soil communication tests use a vacuum and chemical smoke to see how air moves from one point to another below the house foundation. Looking at the smoke’s flow in this test can help see what radon reduction systems can work in your home.

Radon in the Water

Radon can be removed from your water supply by two methods. One is the point-of-use method and the other is point-of-entry method. The point-of-entry method treats the water and removes the radon before it enters your home. The point-of-use method treats the water and removes the radon from the tap by way of a filter system. The point-of-use method is fine for the tap but doesn’t remove it from the bathwater or washing machine water. For the most complete method, a point-of-entry system does best.
