A Summer with You

I cannot help but wonder if
This heat will end, and when
The autumn breeze will wick away
Sweet summer’s sweat again.

Our lazy, relaxing slumber,
Kept cool by breeze and boughs
Of alder trees and bumble bees,
Brings smiles and nose to nose.

I cannot help but wonder if
The thought has crossed your mind
How many moments remain for us,
Our paths, to be entwined.

Our interlacing fingers hold
What the summer sun cannot;
Warmth unwaning, days containing
Golden light too bright to blot.

I cannot help but wonder if,
As we doze here ‘neath night’s sky,
The August sun has ever set
On one as lucky as I.
