5 Wise Tips for Buying Thrift Store Clothing

Purchasing clothing from thrift stores is a wonderful way to have a nice wardrobe while saving money. I am generally not a name brand shopper, but I have found some wonderful name brand clothing in thrift stores such as Cato and Coldwater Creek. Best of all, my thrift store purchases of name brand tops cost me less than five dollars each. These tips and having a sharp eye will help you make wise clothing purchases.

1. Before heading out to the thrift stores evaluate your wardrobe, so you know what you are looking for as well as the size and color needed. Also, think about clothing items you may need in the coming seasons.

2. Now think about financial matters. Know your budget and what payment methods are accepted by the store. For example, some thrift stores do not accept credit or debit cards. Bringing cash can help to resist the temptation to spend more than your budget allows.

3. Once you get to the thrift store, do not get side tracked. Stick to your plan and look for the clothing items on your list, whether it is a paper list or one in your head.

4. When you have found the ideal article of clothing, be sure to examine it closely. Make sure to look for such things as stains, tears, and missing buttons. Take note of the stitching at sleeve edges, hems, and necklines to see if the stitching is intact.

5. Always try on clothing before buying the item. It may not fit or you may not like that particular style on you. Some people I know do not like to try on clothing in the store, but those same people are often ones not good about returning items either. It wastes money to buy something you will not wear and will just take up closet space.

Finding thrift stores to search for clothing is usually easy. My favorite thrift stores in North Carolina are the Goodwill stores. Two local thrift stores which support victims of domestic violence are Safe Space Thrift Store in Louisburg, NC and The Purple Shoe Thrift Shoppe in Zebulon, NC. Another thrift store, which benefits animals is the Cause for Paws Thrift Store. I have been to their stores in Zebulon and Raleigh, NC. The links at the end of this article will help you locate thrift stores in your area. Best wishes for frugal shopping in your search for stylish clothing at a good price.
