5 Holiday Movies Worth Watching

When the leaves have changed colors and have fallen to the ground, when the wind picks up a draft, when the snow starts to fall, when the ground is cold; it must be close to Christmas. Families are gathering around to pick out that perfect Christmas tree, to hang that wonderful wreath, and to enjoy the happiness and joy that is the season. At this time, one of the greatest events takes place in homes across America; all holiday movies make there way out of storage and into the family room. It is the most wonderful time of the year because we find comfort in those movies; they have become a part of our traditions. What movies make there way onto your television set this time of year?

It is hard to pick just five isn’t it? So often, we have those classics sitting on the shelf too; “It’s a Wonderful Life”, “A Christmas Carol”, “A Christmas Story”, “Miracle on 34th Street”, “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, “White Christmas”, “The Nutcracker”, “Babes in Toy-land”, etc. There are so many to choose from and to go back to over and over again.

For our family, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is a given. We actually prefer the cartoon version over the newer movie version. Both are equally fantastic, we just have four children under the age of eight around here so, a little older and a little more cartoon-like is a necessity.

In keeping up with the children’s Christmas spirit, we also love to watch all of the “Santa Claus” movies. They are a more modern movie venture but, comical and cute all the same. Each one of them has drama, humor, sadness, and a happy ending.

The last movie enjoyed mostly by the little ones in our home is the “Polar Express”, an extremely well done modern film starring the voice of Tom Hanks. It captures all that Santa and Christmas are about. That believing in Santa Claus has to do with childhood innocence and a pure of heart imagination. It is beautifully created.

Now, if we are talking more about the adult movie going experience, I enjoy the newer version of the classic “A Christmas Carol”, “Scrooged”. It is about the same type of grumpy about Christmas guy but, has a few hilarious twists.

The best holiday movie, which I have saved for last, has to be the “National Lampoons Christmas Vacation”. One of the most funny, every family can relate to kinds of movies. The perfect tree debacle, the stringing of the lights upon the house and how much is too much, the family gatherings and dreams about what you are going to do with your usual Christmas bonus, and the relative that really irritates you but that you know would never walk away if you needed them. Now, that is a good holiday movie.

Lets review: “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” – the cartoon version, all of the “Santa Claus” movies, The “Polar Express”, “Scrooged”, and the “National Lampoons Christmas Vacation”; a hard list to make but, a rather stellar one!
