2011 Emmy Winners and Highlights of the Night

The 63rd annual Emmy awards aired tonight live from Los Angeles. The show, which honors outstanding work and performances by those working in the TV industry proved to be a success thanks to Hilarious host Jane Lynch, and a few unexpected moments during the show. Highlights of the show included grand musical numbers and a few unexpected winners.

On the red carpet before the show, we were given glimpses of the stars arriving in stunning fashions to what looked like a very large crowd. The cast of The Office gave us some glimpses on what we should expect in the upcoming season. They were very excited about what their characters’ reactions were going to be to new addition James Spader, who they mentioned would bring a quirky and mysterious element to the show. Steve Carell, who coordinated beautifully in black with his wife Nancy, mentioned how he had a hard time saying goodbye to his cast members on the last episode of the show, and how he was looking forward to seeing them again tonight.

In regards to fashion, most of the men wore classic suits with either ties or bow-ties. Alan Cumming splashed on a bit of color to his suit, by donning a pair of colorful Hawaiian printed pants which rang true to his bubbly personality. Another male fashion standout was Joel McHale who wore a powder blue suit with black trim. LL Cool J was perhaps the sharpest dressed man on the red carpet, dressing up his beautiful suit with a newsboy cap and silver pocket square.

For women on the red carpet, metallics and reds were the two most popular colors of the night. From Nina Dobrev, who looked beautiful in a red form fitting strapless mermaid gown, to the always sophisticated Kate Winslet in her red cap-sleeve Elie Saab gown. Some other red favorites of the night were Lea Michele in Marchesa, Kerry Washington in Zuhair Murad, and Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang. One of the funniest moments of the night happened when Sofia Vergara and Rob Lowe read Amy Poehler’s name as one of the nominees for lead actress in a comedy. Poehler rushed towards the stage before the rest of the nominees were read, and was followed by the rest of the nominees as they all gathered together in a mock pageant ceremony where winner Melissa McCarthy was awarded with a crown and a bouquet of roses. The crowd looked on in confusion and delight as some of the funniest women on television stood onstage along with the winner. Another funny moment of the night was a performance by the Lonely Island, a group made up of SNL cast members, who performed some of their greatest hits like “I just had Sex,” along with special guest Akon, “Jack Sparrow” performed alongside Michael Bolton, and “3 Way (The Golden Rule).”

Altogether, the show was entertaining to watch and had enough variety to keep it interesting. Jane Lynch was great as a host and provided many laughs in between all the presenters.
