Waxed Paper Stained Glass Craft

Crayons and waxed paper are a great combination. When crayon shavings are ironed between two sheets of waxed paper they turn into beautiful wax works of art for windows, and they look like stained glass. They can be surrounded by construction paper frames or simply trimmed for display. When completed with care, the finished designs look like real stained glass, and they make great gifts for family and friends. Adults and kids alike will enjoy designing these wax creations that look like beautiful stained glass creations.

This is a fantastic way to use old crayons that are no longer sharp and too short to use for coloring. Buy new ones for coloring, and save the old ones for these types of craft projects. They are worth saving for stained glass projects and much, much more.

Necessary Supplies

To make a beautiful stained glass design you will need waxed paper, crayons, a toothpick or wooden skewer for scratching designs into the wax, scissors, a crayon sharpener, a large brown bag and an iron. Construction paper, plastic containers, and a hole punch are optional.

Procedure

Begin by making crayon shavings with a crayon sharpener, and keep the colors separate in small containers such as plastic prescription bottles or something similar. Use as many colors as desired. The more hues used, the greater the detail.

Next, use a wooden skewer or a toothpick to lightly create a design or picture on a sheet of waxed paper. Carefully sprinkle the crayon shavings onto the waxed paper inside of the lines. Keep in mind that the colors will melt beyond the lines once the stained glass design is ironed. Consider creating black or dark gray lines between the sections to add realism to the craft.

Set the heat level of the iron to a moderate setting. While the iron is heating, carefully place another sheet of waxed paper of the same size over the top of the decorated piece. Place a section of brown bag over the waxed paper, and iron it until the crayon shavings melt completely and create a bond with the waxed paper.

After the melted wax cools, cut around the colorful design, or frame it with construction paper. Punch a hole in the center of the top, and hang it in a bright window. It will look amazing!
