Warning Ignored in Rape

COMMENTARY | I called the asst. metro editor at St. Pete Times on Aug. 29, 2011, and told him that ADT Security and its affiliates do not run background checks on sales reps who enter homes — yes, when women are alone, and children are home with their mothers.

After a short layoff from a magazine, I worked for ADT in Clearwater, Fla., for two weeks in August. The lengthy application had several warnings that a background check would be done, but it was not. The manager told me they don’t want to spend the $7 per employee to run the check.

I am a 14-year published Journalist who has won AP awards, written for New York Times companies including the Gainesville Sun.

I gave him enough details (I worked there at the time) about reps on work release, just out of prison, etc.

In an age when workers are screened to push burgers at McDonald’s, etc., this is disgraceful that such an important news tip was ignored.

That woman who was raped by an ADT employee may well suffer for life, and nearly lost her life. The (accused) rapist (no bail) told Sherrifs that his only regret was not killing the woman.

If he’s an editor, I’m Santa Claus.

And he missed my present. …
