Understanding Amumu in League of Legends

Amumu, awoke in the Shurima Desert wrapped as a mummy, fell to tears, and never regained his happiness. A Yordle, colorful and furry humanoid creatures, Amumu is an unusual character, not to mention that he is undead. Amumu is a tank, built to target high health opponents and keep the battle controlled. Not only can Amumu tank the battlefield, he is also an excellent jungler.

ABILTIES

Cursed Touch, Amumu’s innate ability removes magic resist upon being hit my his attacks. This allows for greater damage while jungling. This also requires opponents to flee from his attacks in group fights due to the massive drain in magic resist. At high levels, Cursed Touch allows Amumu to be a frighteningly powerful opponent.

An effective and terrifying ability, Bandage Toss is a skill shot ability requiring the player to aim the ability as they please. The ability pulls Amumu to the target, stunning and dealing high magic damage to the enemy champion. Due to its great range, Amumu can capture even the fleetest retreating enemy, or catch an opponent before they slay an ally.

Despair, built to deal percentage damage to nearby opponents, high health champions will flee from Amumu do to this ability to tear down their stores of health. Costing mana per second, Despair is best supplemented by a mana regeneration item or blue golem buff. This ability is also useful to compliment his jungling prowess after Tantrum is taken.

Tantrum, is Amumu’s great tank ability, passively reduces base physical damage that is dealt to him. This allows minions and monsters to deal less damage while lowering enemy attack damage. When activated, Amumu deals damage to surrounding enemies. Each time he is hit, the cooldown is reduced allowing for quick attacks in team fights. In tandem with Cursed Touch, Tantrum allows for great damage output for not only jungle creeps but also opposing champions.

Amumu’s ultimate, an expansive Area of Effect stun, allows for group fights to be altered by Amumu’s ability, Curse of the Sad Mummy. Alongside the group stun, magic damage strikes all hit by this ability. Skilled Amumu players try to auto attack all opponents before casting the ability. It also allows for team mates to capture fleeing enemies, and allows time for Bandage Toss to cool down for Amumu’s own capture.

SUMMONER SPELLS, MASTERIES AND RUNES

Summoner Spells can change the game of a tank greatly. If staying under the guise of a control oriented tank, Exhaust is a great choice for Amumu. This allows easier targeting of his skill shot, and keeps enemies close to his Despair and Tantrum. Teleport is another great choice for any tank, allowing for map control against minion waves and back door pushes.

Defensive Masteries will allow for Amumu to be best utilized, but make sure to grab some mana regeneration from the Utility skill tree. Offensive runes in general are useless to Amumu, unless an unorthodox player wants to bring the fight to the enemy, targeting high attack speed characters and making use of Tantrum to its fullest power.

Amumu relies heavily on his defensive capabilities and is known for being the middle of any fight. Building armor and magic resist will be the best use of runes. Allowing for mana regeneration and attack speed runes will remove the weaknesses of Despair and Cursed Touch respectively. Quintessence choices are best used to exploit the player’s strengths and protect their weaknesses.

FINAL NOTE

Bandage Toss can be a good initiation tool for group fights, but try to keep it to capture a fleeing or weak enemy. It can also be used to pull Amumu to a neutral creep to flee from the battle. Keep watch of Amumu’s mana stores when using Despair because unless he gains mana regeneration, he will deplete his mana quickly. To turn the tide of the battle, Curse of the Sad Mummy should be cast at the opportune moment rather than at the beginning of the fight,

Amumu requires the player to be good at skill shots. Spend some time learning how to properly use a skill shot before playing this champion in a ranked match. Remember, Curse of the Sad Mummy has a 1 for 1 ability power ratio. Building ability power alongside his defensive capabilities will make him an effective fighter.
