Toshiba Qosmio X500: Eighteen Inches of Pure Power

The Qosmio F60 is currently formed by the model with 15 “display, and dall’X500 subject of our test. This is the biggest thing: the 18.4-inch screen sizes and left important guess great possibilities, but at the same time if it discourages use on the go. With almost 5 kg and over 40 cm in width is best to leave the Qosmio X500 on the desk or in the lounge, the limit can be carried from room to room. There is also to consider that the battery reaches about two hours of battery life, using office applications and surfing the Web with Wi-Fi interface is always active.

The Qosmio X500 has other advantages: it is built with great care and has a top-notch hardware equipment, suitable even for demanding tasks like video editing (there is also a Firewire port). It behaves very well as a home multimedia center, thanks to the display with full HD resolution and Blu-ray optical drive. The design is very unique, full gloss finish and an aggressive contrast between the colors red and black. Most surfaces are very thin texture, nice to see. The frame material is the normal plastic, the whole thing looks very robust and even the hinges of the display, a critical element in notebooks so great, no uncertainties in the operation. Keyboard and touchpad are functional, but the thick frame makes typing uncomfortable, since the forearms and elbows remain suspended in the air.

Our configuration includes a Core i7 720QM: Mobile is one of the fastest models, has 6 MB of L2 cache and a nominal clock frequency of 1.6 GHz to 2.8 GHz in elevating Turbo Boost. The heat is negligible: the temperature of the CPU in idle state it maintains about 50 degrees and even at full load, the cooling fan remains silent. The abundant space within the frame allowed to install a cooling system of adequate size and apparently high efficiency.

The graphics chip is an Nvidia GTS 250M: GT215 from the architecture and is more recent, but thanks to the faster memory type GDDR-5 is still able to offer good results. The numbers provided by the 3D benchmarks are on a good level, considering the world of laptops, but in any case, especially those who want a laptop to play would do well to look at a few other models from Toshiba, maybe with a display with lower resolution. The 18.4-inch Qosmio X500 is perfect for watching movies, not for games, that the native resolution of 1,920 Ã- 1,080 points become problematic. The picture quality is remarkable, with vivid colors and deep blacks, just the brightness could be slightly higher. The large diagonal screen avoids problems with readability at small sizes.

The space inside the frame is so wide that it was possible to insert two discs. Our two Toshiba 500 GB each, seen by the system as two separate units and not in Raid. These two units with a speed of 5,400 revolutions per minute, are fast but on such a system would see more disks from 7,200 rpm, as heat and power consumption are not a problem Another important element is the optical drive, a multi-burner capable of recording (and reading) Blu-Ray. Manufactured by Matshita, is a rather expensive device that finds its ideal location on a notebook of this type. The allocation of ports and interfaces is plentiful: in addition to the aforementioned Firewire HDMI is a digital video output, useful for connecting a television generation, then the e-SATA port for external hard drives and four USB 2.0. The Qosmio X500 is certainly a highly expandable netbooks. The very thick, however, makes uncomfortable writing with the keyboard.

The stereo speakers are signed and have a Harman Kardon audio performance above average, but certainly not optimal if you want you can connect your home theater system to the optical S / PDIF, shared with the headphone jack. The network chip is class Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi card is compatible with 802.11n. The installed operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, shared choice for a high-performance notebook like this, the software bundle is very rich and accessory includes many features from Toshiba. In other cases we judged negatively excessive amount of tools and drivers loaded at boot time, but this notebook is so fast that it goes virtually unnoticed.

Finally a note on the price list, which appears very high and not entirely justified even considering the goodness of components and construction. Spending less than you could buy a desktop PC monitor with a more powerful and even bigger, then it would be desirable to retouch the price down.
