Top 5 Places to Go Cross Country Skiing in Montana

Are you a cross country skier in search of a vacation destination? You might want to consider planning a trip to Montana. The Land of the Big Sky has a lot of well-groomed, cross country destinations to choose from.

Here are my picks for the top five:

1. Izaak Walton Inn

The Izaak Walton Inn is located in Essex on the border of Glacier National Park. It makes my list for its 30-plus miles of well groomed trails, seasoned guides and unique accommodations. You may opt to go the trails alone if you prefer. The views are spectacular and visitors may choose to spend the night in a restored locomotive or caboose. Equipment rentals are available on site. Its open year-round and rates vary.

2. Bohart Ranch Cross Country Ski Center

The Bohart Ranch Cross Country Ski Center is located in Bozeman and features over 30 miles of wide trails with varying degrees of difficulty. I find it to be the perfect place for families because there are some interpretive trails geared towards kids and the prices are right. A day pass will set you back anywhere from $8 to $15 per person and children 6 years of age and younger are admitted for free. It opens daily from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

3. Stillwater Mountain Lodge

The Stillwater Mountain Lodge in Whitefish made my list for its 15-plus miles of trails and pet friendly policies. It offers over 2 miles of trails where you can bring your dog. You may expect to pay $10 to $15 per person. Children 12 years old and younger are admitted gratis. The lodge is open year-round.

4. Homestake Lodge

The Homestake Lodge near Butte is another dog friendly place. It features over 30 miles of trails including 10 where you may bring your pet. You have the option of spending the night or just the day. Day passes range in price from $8 to $10 and the most cost effective time to visit is after 4 p.m. It is open year-round.

5. Lone Mountain Ranch

The 80-plus miles of immaculately groomed trails, scenic views and hospitality is what makes the Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky a stand out in my book. Rental equipment, guide services, lodging and meals are available on site. You don’t need to be an overnight guest to use the trails either. A day pass will cost you $9 to $18 per person. Children 12 years of age and younger ski for free.

My family enjoys winter sports and has traveled extensively.
