Top 5 Alabama State Parks for Golfing

Alabama has quite a few wonderful state parks, several of which cater to golfers. In my opinion, the best parks tend to offer well maintained, championship courses as well as overnight accommodations and onsite pro shops. Here’s a quick rundown on five of the best ones:

1. Oak Mountain State Park

Oak Mountain State Park is located in Pelham and features a highly rated, par 72, 18-hole golf course. Golf Digest has ranked it among the top 75 golf courses in the nation! The park also features a pro shop, snack bar, practice green, driving range and a chipping green. Collectively, green fees and a cart rental will lighten you wallet $24 or more depending on when you visit. It opens daily and closes at sundown.

2. Lake Guntersville State Park

The Lake Guntersville State Park is located in Guntersville. What makes it great for golfers is the 18-hole golf course onsite. It was renovated in 2009 with input from pro golfer Jerry Pate. You may expect to shell out at least $17 in green fees and a minimum of $6 in cart rental fees. In addition to the golf course the park offers duffers a driving range, pro shop, a snack bar, putting green and overnight packages. It opens each day from 7 a.m. until sundown.

3. Gulf State Park

Looking for an 18-hole golf course with a pro shop onsite? Check out the digs at the Gulf State Park. It is located in Gulf Shores and the park opens every day at 7 a.m. Green fees start at $18 and a golf cart rental will typically cost you $9 or more. There are also cabins onsite so you may want to book a stay and play package.

4. Roland Cooper State Park

Roland Cooper State Park is located in Camden. It features a par 36, 9-hole golf course and a driving range. What I like about this park is that it offers discounts to disabled golfers as well as senior citizens and campers who plan on hitting the course. Green fees start at $8 and golf cart rentals start at $6. The course opens daily at 7 a.m.

5. Joe Wheeler State Park

Joe Wheeler State Park is located in Rogersville. What separates it from the rest is that the 18-hole golf course is located within a wildlife sanctuary. Being around so much wildlife almost gives it an exotic feel. Green fees vary by season and affordable golf and stay packages are often available year round. The course is open daily from 7 a.m. until sunset.
