Tips to Prepare for the SAT

Taking the SAT test can be an anxiety-ridden experience to prepare for. Even so, every student should try to do their absolute best when taking the test. Here are some helpful tips to better prepare you for the big testing day.

Get an SAT preparation book
A lot of students are hesitant to spend money if they don’t have to, however, a good SAT preparation book can be an invaluable resource. “The Official SAT Study Guide,” put out by Collegeboard, is a great book to use in preparation for your SAT. This book, or another well-reviewed book, are likely to provide you with lots of useful information as you study and prepare for the SAT. Don’t overlook these resources.

Take the practice tests
Taking the practice test for the SAT should be an obvious way to prepare for the test, but many students fail to do this. Collegeboard is another great resource for this, offering a free online and print practice test. Don’t limit yourself to just one practice test though, search out as many practice tests as you can and take them all. Review the areas you didn’t do well on and make an effort to educate yourself as to why you did poorly in those areas. By taking the practice tests, you’re likely to get a better feel for how the real test will be laid out, as well as learn skills that may help when you take the real test.

Take a class
Many high schools and colleges offer SAT preparation classes. These classes, much like the practices tests, can help to better prepare students for the actual test. If there are classes available to you, it may be beneficial to enroll in one prior to taking the SAT. If there are no SAT preparation courses available locally, there are online SAT preparation courses available through the internet. Some of these online courses are free, while some may cost money. Research any courses that cost money and try to find reviews on the course. If the reviews are good, the course may be worth the cost.

Form a study group
It can be difficult to motivate yourself to study alone, not to mention boring. If you know others who are preparing to take the SATs, such as classmates, invite them to start a study group with you. A study group is a great way to quiz each other and work on areas in which you struggle. If you don’t know anyone preparing for the SATs, consider placing a flyer on the bulletin board at your local colleges and high schools. You may just make some new friends, and do better on your test this way.
