This New Years Eve, I Drink to My Health

I know it’s a corny title. Nevertheless, this New Years Eve, I really do intend to drink to my health. That’s why I’m starting my top five New Years resolutions now. Like most people, I have a yearly New Years resolution. Also, like most people, I abandon it before the new year is out. This year will be different. I can feel it. This isn’t just one New Years resolution. It’s a whole new way of life. So, where will I begin? What will be the first step of my journey? What five New Years resolutions will inspire me to drink to my health?

1. I resolve to know myself. What does that even mean? For me, that means making a life for myself beyond the needs of others. I’m a nurturer, a caregiver, or whatever you might want to call it. I help people. It’s what I do best. Still, it shouldn’t be all I do. In the past, that has been the case. So, I’m saying it’s time for me to put my needs not first, but equal to the needs of others. I think that’s probably the healthiest place to begin for me. It will help me make all the other changes I intend to make.

2. I resolve to stop giving lip service to a healthy diet. I’ve been a vegetarian since the age of twelve. I would have been one much sooner, if it weren’t for my parents. Still, not everything I eat is good for me. If it was, I wouldn’t be so overweight. I know what I should be eating. I’ve studied volumes and volumes of material on the subject of nutrition. I just don’t always practice what I preach. All that stops today. That way, on New Years Eve, I can truly drink to my health.

3. I resolve to move. Starting today, I will get up off my fat, lazy behind and do something physical every day of my life. I may go for a walk. I may dance. I may hop on the elliptical. I may pop in an exercise video. Whatever form of exercise I choose, I will enjoy it, because I know it will make me healthy. I might do something different each day. I might do the same thing every day. Who knows? I might surprise myself. I might find out I’m an athlete at heart. In the end, only one thing matters. I will improve my health and drink to that health on New Years. What’s more, I’ll feel good about it.

4. I resolve to celebrate life. Life is for the living. Life is meant to be experienced, not observed. I will climb out of my foxhole today. I will spend time with friends. I will talk to people. I will go to the beach. I will go sledding. I will go to an occasional party. I will get out there and see what the world has to offer. I will do something different every day of my life starting right now. I will enjoy my life because it’s the only one I have. I will invite my loved ones to join me. If they’re not willing, I will go it alone. When I drink to my health on New Years Eve, I will have a life worth drinking to.

5. I resolve to inspire others. Won’t you join me in my resolution? I would love nothing more than to see every person on this planet living life as it was meant to be lived. As I said, I am a caregiver. I care about others just as much as I care about myself. Stop living your life from the couch. Stop watching others live their lives on that little box in your living room. Get out there and live your own. Be the person everyone wishes they could be. Start to live your life well today. That way I can drink to your health and mine on New Years when I pick up that glass.
